Richmond City Public Schools Custodial and Plant Services Workers Ratify First Contract with Significant Improvements

Press Contact: Matt Maciejczak (804)321-0356  communications@teamsterslocal322.org (Richmond, VA) – In a decisive move, members of Teamsters Local 322, who are employees of the Richmond City Public Schools Custodial and Plant Services department, have voted to ratify their first-ever contract with the administration. This historic agreement comes after a lengthy organizing campaign, following the lifting of restrictions on public sector collective bargaining in the Commonwealth of Virginia in May 2021.

The newly ratified contract introduces substantial enhancements to the employees' wages and working conditions. Over the three-year term of the contract, workers will benefit from wage decompression and a remarkable 22% raise. "This contract is a testament to the hard work and determination of our members," said Brian Peyton, President of Teamsters Local 322. "The improvements in wages, benefits, and working conditions reflect the value and respect these workers deserve. We are proud of what we have achieved together."

A standout improvement in the contract is the significant increase in paid time off, ensuring employees have more opportunities for rest and personal time. Lawrence Pope, a custodian with Richmond Public Schools who played a key role in the negotiations, expressed his satisfaction: "We fought hard for this contract, and I am thrilled with the outcome. The wage increases and improved working conditions will make a significant difference in our lives. I am proud to have been part of this process and to see our efforts rewarded." Additionally, enhancements to the uniform policy, including footwear reimbursement and inclement weather gear, have been included to better support the workforce.

Teamsters Local 322, representing over 2,000 workers in the Richmond, Virginia area, has once again shown its strength and dedication to its members' rights and benefits. The bargaining unit at Richmond Public Schools, comprising of 200 members, overwhelmingly approved the agreement, with 85% of the members voting in favor. "The solidarity and persistence of our members have been instrumental in securing this agreement," said Dwayne Johnson, Director of Organizing for Teamsters Local 322. "This victory demonstrates the power of collective bargaining and the importance of standing together for better conditions."
